Seattle. The city of flowers
I’m back from Seattle and I had a hard time deciding what photos to share first. In my view, Seattle is about flowers, coffee, good food, seafood, views, street life. Since this was a family short holiday (a weekend actually) I didn’t have much time to take pictures, but I have a few I love that I’d like to share. With the views we were not too lucky, due to the smoke created by the largest wildfires in the state’s history. Food was impressive, coffee was excellent, the street life vibrant, and the flowers… everywhere. This was one of the things I didn’t know about Seattle, they love flowers… I lived on four continents and visited many countries, but I’ve never seen so many people buying flowers anywhere else. Below are two photos taken at the famous Waterfront Farmers Market. 🙂

Perhaps their cloudy weather impulse them to fill it with the color of flowers. Once I knew a Seattle professor, of Molecular Biology if I’m not wrong, that told me that the Central Library was an amazing place in Seattle, for what I saw in photographs there is abundance of colors there, that could explain part of his enthusiasm.

I just searched a little bit more, this is what I found: “Resolution 14456, adopted October 7, 1942, established Seattle as The City of Flowers. The Resolution requested and urged citizens to plant and cultivate a wide variety of flowers to further beautify the City.” Also, looks like Dahlia is the official flower symbol of Seattle, that explains why it was everywhere. I wonder what’s happening in the winter, they must miss all these colors.

Seattle still has flowers in the winter! In addition to the temperate climate there are greenhouse growers. Seattle has large numbers of refugees from Asian countries like the ethnic minority groups of Laos, your flower-seller pictured here.

Thank you so much Valerie, great to have your insight. I knew few things about Seattle before visiting, but never expected to see so many flowers and so many people on the streets holding beautiful flower bouquets. I love flowers so for me was a pleasant surprise and something new I found out about the city.
