“…but people are more than just the way they look.” (Madeleine L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door)

The most enriching thing about living in Dubai is the diversity of people you meet and cultures you get to interact with every day.  I just love how my collection of ‘faces’ is taking shape, and for me these these are much more than faces. What I try to do is capture a moment when everything I know about that person shows on their face. The lens of the camera is not as important as the way I see those people through my own eyes and filters… beautiful, in so many different ways…

Pretty classy

I rarely pay attention to cars, but this one screams attention. Apparently is a Mercedes SL Roadster Vintage, I’m sure car lovers will know more. I’ll give credit for the idea to my friend Raw’a, who wanted to get photographed next to the car, and I’ll take the credit for finding this angle that makes this pic one of my favs so far. I am terribly sorry I had to blur the number, but I have no idea what the legislation is in this case and I don’t want issues. The photo is taken in Al Quoz, Al Serkal Avenue, a very happening art district of Dubai. It is also the first picture (I know about) to be taken from my Instagram by someone who posted it on Twitter without indicating the source and pretending is theirs. I guess I can call myself a photographer now 🙂

All that jazz

When I joined a brunch at Bice restaurant last Friday (in Hilton JBR), I was hoping I would come out with some black and white shots of the awesome band (Mark Zitti e i Fratelli Coltelli) and I did. Not really a work of art, but I think they nicely reflect the spirit of the day.

Well done guys, always a pleasure listening to you.

Sun kissed: Maria

Another impromptu photoshoot today. With Maria. The sun was harsh so I over exposed them on purpose to render how the light was in reality. The rest was perfect: the wall, the wind, and the model 🙂

Pictures taken with Fuji X100 at f2.8, 1/1000 sec.

Sunset portraits series: Eddie

This is probably the first child portrait I made. Nothing was premeditated, me and his mom were having a walk in the park (back home in my natal city in Romania) and ran to a spot where I could capture the sunset. He was as captivated as me about the beautiful scene – I wonder if he ever sat to watch a sunset for so long before (this time he was forced by the crazy adults). It was quite dark and the photos are taken with very high ISO (from 2500 to 6500), with my Fuji x100. For some reason I kept my aperture at 5.6, have no idea why, I wish it was bigger.

Sunset portraits series: Darina

At first I was a little bit intimidated by photographing people; fear of them not liking the photos I guess… Women especially, no matter how beautiful they are, they tend to be over critical with their appearance in pictures. Darina, my colleague, despite being one of the most beautiful woman I know, has the same problem, so you can imagine my happiness when she liked few of the pictures I took of her. We are lucky to work in a beautiful office with a view of the sunset over the Gulf Sea, so we have this gorgeous light every day late in the afternoon.

PS I am impressed with how my little Fuji x100 works for portraits (except maybe the lack of zoom and the fact that I need to go very close to the subject’s face).

Autumn grace

There is something about autumn; a sweet, delicate nostalgia that awakens the deepest emotions and memories… leaves falling gracefully knowing there is always a new beginning. One of the reasons I started photography is that I knew it’s only from nature we can learn harmony and beauty.

Pure joy by C. Brancusi

“Don’t look for obscure formulas or mystery in my work. It is pure joy that I offer you. Look at my sculptures until you see them. Those closest to God have seen them.” C. Brancusi (Romanian sculptor)

Sunset portraits series: Lavinia

Lavinia is one of my dearest friends. She is smart, generous and she has the voice of an angel. Her passion is music, her quest is for inner peace. While I was in Bucharest we met in her favourite spot in the park (Japanese Garden in Herastrau Park) at her favourite moment of the day, sunset. She was back from a full day yoga course but she still found the strength to pose for me :). All photos are taken with my Nikon D5300 with a 40mm lens.

PS Please forgive her wrinkled top, imperfections in posture or any other distracting elements (inclusive the little dog which I kept on purpose, since it was very attracted by her moves, or energy) 🙂 There was no preparation involved in this ‘photoshoot’.
